How to Detect and Respond to an Addiction

How should you respond to possible addictive behaviour?

The inability to control drug use causes a profound disruption in the person, both physically and emotionally. The most common signs include sudden changes in behaviour and mood, repeated lying, neglect of responsibilities or leisure activities, as well as changes in weight, changes in the pupils, insomnia or excessive sleepiness, among other symptoms that point to a loss of control and the need for professional help.

When a family suspects that one of its members has a problematic use of drugs or alcohol, it should not react with rejection or fall into overprotection, such as covering up their lies or justifying their behaviour. The most appropriate attitude is to act with empathy, understanding and emotional support, but always setting clear boundaries and encouraging the person to seek specialist professional help.

If the person who uses wishes to assess whether their use could be considered a dependence, they can take the following self-assessment tests, which help to identify the level of risk and the need for intervention.
