It shows itself as a <strong data-start=\"176\" data-end=\"218\">maladaptive pattern of behaviour<\/strong>, in which the <strong data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"258\">use of substances<\/strong> such as <strong data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"275\">alcohol<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"288\">cocaine<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"290\" data-end=\"302\">cannabis<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"322\">psychotropic medication<\/strong> becomes a priority for the person, above the fundamental aspects of their life. This shift in priorities often leads to marked deterioration in various areas of personal life. In addition, there are also <strong data-start=\"537\" data-end=\"565\">addictions without a substance<\/strong>, known as <strong data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"613\">behavioural addictions<\/strong>, which include <strong data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"653\">gambling<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"688\">compulsive internet use<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"705\">shopping<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"710\" data-end=\"730\">sexual activity<\/strong> or certain repetitive behaviours that create dependence.<\/p><p data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"1216\">In general terms, <strong data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"837\">all drugs<\/strong> affect the <strong data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"877\">central nervous system<\/strong> by releasing <strong data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"925\">neurotransmitters<\/strong> that disrupt its natural functioning. Over time, the body loses its ability to produce these substances by itself, which creates a <strong data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1113\">physiological need to use<\/strong> in order to maintain internal balance and avoid the physical and emotional discomfort associated with withdrawal.<\/p><p data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1685\">From a psychological perspective, <strong data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1281\">addictive substances<\/strong> usually serve a specific function for the person who uses them. They can <strong data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1394\">temporarily relieve painful emotions<\/strong>, provide a <strong data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1436\">sense of escape<\/strong> or meet inner needs such as the search for <strong data-start=\"1492\" data-end=\"1503\">euphoria<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1505\" data-end=\"1522\">disinhibition<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1536\">control<\/strong>. This experience reinforces the belief that using is necessary in order to feel good, creating an ever stronger bond with the substance.<\/p><p data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"2195\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">As the <strong data-start=\"1703\" data-end=\"1715\">addiction<\/strong> progresses, the person <strong data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1782\">loses the ability to control their use<\/strong>, even when they recognise its negative consequences. One of the central features of this illness is <strong data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"1934\">alteration of the brain<\/strong>, especially in the areas related to <strong data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"1998\">self-control<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2004\" data-end=\"2026\">decision-making<\/strong>. The maintenance stage is considered to have been reached when these healthy behaviours are sustained for more than six months, thus consolidating the recovery process and relapse prevention.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"lqd-css-sticky-column
