Taking anxiolytics and\/or hypnotics (<strong data-start=\"315\" data-end=\"332\">hypnosedatives<\/strong>) at <strong data-start=\"336\" data-end=\"356\">higher doses<\/strong> than necessary can cause <strong data-start=\"390\" data-end=\"405\">drowsiness<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"407\" data-end=\"434\">memory difficulties<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"437\" data-end=\"477\">impaired motor coordination<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"878\">The <strong data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"525\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> warns primary care that, although benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed, they are <strong data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"649\">not the recommended option<\/strong> for relieving <strong data-start=\"666\" data-end=\"682\">acute stress<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"701\">insomnia<\/strong> after a traumatic event. They should be prescribed <strong data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"767\">for short periods<\/strong> (a few weeks) because afterwards they <strong data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"824\">lose therapeutic effectiveness<\/strong> and encourage <strong data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"877\">tolerance and dependence<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"1237\">According to the latest <strong data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"964\">survey on alcohol and drug use in Spain (2011\u20132012)<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"969\" data-end=\"998\">only type of use that increased<\/strong> was that of <strong data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1026\">hypnosedatives<\/strong>. And, although drug use in general is higher among <strong data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1089\">men<\/strong>, for <strong data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1111\">hypnosedatives<\/strong> the proportion of <strong data-start=\"1129\" data-end=\"1140\">women<\/strong> is <strong data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1152\">double<\/strong> that of men: <strong data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1178\">7.6%<\/strong> of men compared with <strong data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1208\">15.3%<\/strong> of women in the last year.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1264\">Types of psychotropic medication<\/h2><ul data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"2036\"><li data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1575\"><p data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1575\"><strong data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1298\">Anxiolytics \/ hypnotics:<\/strong> Prescribed to reduce anxiety or help sleep. With a <strong data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1388\">short or long half-life<\/strong>, they have a <strong data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1427\">strong psychoactive effect<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1460\">can create dependence<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1484\">Abrupt withdrawal<\/strong> after prolonged use, without a gradual reduction schedule, can cause <strong data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1572\">withdrawal syndrome<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1893\"><p data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1893\"><strong data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1597\">Antidepressants:<\/strong> Psychoactive drugs for <strong data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1635\">major depression<\/strong>, certain <strong data-start=\"1650\" data-end=\"1676\">anxiety disorders<\/strong> and some <strong data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1728\">eating disorders<\/strong>. At <strong data-start=\"1732\" data-end=\"1747\">low doses<\/strong> they may be used for <strong data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1782\">insomnia<\/strong>. They do not cause dependence in the strict sense, but <strong data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1854\">sudden discontinuation<\/strong> can produce <strong data-start=\"1870\" data-end=\"1890\">adverse effects<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1894\" data-end=\"2036\"><p data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"2036\"><strong data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"1931\">Antipsychotics or neuroleptics:<\/strong> Drugs used <strong data-start=\"1948\" data-end=\"1966\">mainly<\/strong>, though not exclusively, in the <strong data-start=\"2004\" data-end=\"2035\">treatment of psychoses<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><hr data-start=\"2038\" data-end=\"2041\" \/><h2 data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2061\">What do we offer?<\/h2><p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2465\"><strong data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2115\">First orientation and information interview.<\/strong> We compile a <strong data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2160\">full clinical history<\/strong> to assess <strong data-start=\"2174\" data-end=\"2198\">history of use<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2200\" data-end=\"2240\">personal and family background<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2242\" data-end=\"2269\">social and family situation<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2272\" data-end=\"2294\">organic conditions<\/strong>. With this assessment we decide whether <strong data-start=\"2342\" data-end=\"2368\">prior detoxification<\/strong> is needed before starting <strong data-start=\"2385\" data-end=\"2401\">psychotherapy<\/strong> and whether <strong data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2425\">treatment<\/strong> will be <strong data-start=\"2431\" data-end=\"2446\">outpatient<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"2449\" data-end=\"2464\">residential<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2467\" data-end=\"2595\"><strong data-start=\"2467\" data-end=\"2504\">If treatment is residential:<\/strong> referral to one of our two <strong data-start=\"2538\" data-end=\"2562\">therapeutic centres<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2564\" data-end=\"2579\">Riera Major<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"2582\" data-end=\"2594\">Can Coll<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2634\"><strong data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2634\">If treatment is outpatient:<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"2635\" data-end=\"3055\"><li data-start=\"2635\" data-end=\"2758\"><p data-start=\"2637\" data-end=\"2758\"><strong data-start=\"2637\" data-end=\"2665\">Individual psychotherapy:<\/strong> orientation and treatment sessions with a <strong data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2755\">psychologist specialising in drug dependence<\/strong>.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2759\" data-end=\"2958\"><p data-start=\"2761\" data-end=\"2958\"><strong data-start=\"2761\" data-end=\"2787\">Psychiatric care:<\/strong> assessment and, where appropriate, introduction of <strong data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"2847\">psychotropic medication<\/strong> to reduce <strong data-start=\"2864\" data-end=\"2875\">craving<\/strong> (intense desire) and the <strong data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"2919\">loss of control<\/strong> when use begins (<strong data-start=\"2943\" data-end=\"2954\">priming<\/strong>).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2959\" data-end=\"2999\"><p data-start=\"2961\" data-end=\"2999\"><strong data-start=\"2961\" data-end=\"2983\">Urine tests<\/strong> (laboratory analysis).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3028\"><p data-start=\"3002\" data-end=\"3028\"><strong data-start=\"3002\" data-end=\"3026\">Family therapy.<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3029\" data-end=\"3055\"><p data-start=\"3031\" data-end=\"3055\"><strong data-start=\"3031\" data-end=\"3055\">Group psychotherapy.<\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ul><hr data-start=\"3057\" data-end=\"3060\" \/><h2 data-start=\"3062\" data-end=\"3101\">Psychotropic medication use among women<\/h2><p data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3445\">According to the latest national survey on alcohol and other drugs, <strong data-start=\"3167\" data-end=\"3194\">15.6% of women<\/strong> \u2014<strong data-start=\"3199\" data-end=\"3208\">double<\/strong> the figure for men\u2014 report having used <strong data-start=\"3250\" data-end=\"3267\">psychotropic medication<\/strong> in the last year. The trend is <strong data-start=\"3302\" data-end=\"3315\">rising<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"3322\" data-end=\"3337\">differences<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"3341\" data-end=\"3364\">widen with age<\/strong>: <strong data-start=\"3366\" data-end=\"3376\">27%<\/strong> of women aged <strong data-start=\"3395\" data-end=\"3411\">55 to 64<\/strong> report use in the last year.<\/p><p data-start=\"3447\" data-end=\"3939\">Although <strong data-start=\"3473\" data-end=\"3484\">men<\/strong> have historically accounted for around <strong data-start=\"3516\" data-end=\"3523\">80%<\/strong> of people in <strong data-start=\"3543\" data-end=\"3558\">treatment<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3564\" data-end=\"3575\">women<\/strong>, especially middle-aged women, show <strong data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3638\">greater reluctance<\/strong> to ask for help. For this reason, at <strong data-start=\"3674\" data-end=\"3705\">Fundaci\u00f3n Salud y Comunidad<\/strong> we have designed a <strong data-start=\"3724\" data-end=\"3747\">specific programme<\/strong> that addresses these barriers, promotes <strong data-start=\"3787\" data-end=\"3809\">freedom from guilt<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3815\" data-end=\"3837\">destigmatisation<\/strong>, and offers <strong data-start=\"3848\" data-end=\"3895\">therapy groups exclusively for women<\/strong> in an environment of <strong data-start=\"3913\" data-end=\"3938\">trust and safety<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"lqd-css-sticky-column elementor-column elementor-col-50
